A Little About Us

First of all, let me start by saying THANK YOU for visiting us here at Rob5 Designs. We are so excited that you decided to take out of your time to see what we’re about.

WHERE WE BEGAN

Our journey started in the summer of 2020 when I decided to purchase a wooden American flag for my dad for Father’s Day. When I received the flag and was disappointed with the quality of the build, I decided I wanted to try my hand at making them myself. After watching hours of videos and reading many articles on the details of building flags, I finally took the leap and bought all the wood to make my first one. Although the build was delayed by Hurricane Laura when she came through and ravaged our area, she couldn’t stop my dream of creating a beautiful flag of my own.

MY FIRST SALE

It wasn’t long after my first flag was completed that I decided to list a flag on Facebook Marketplace. At that time I truly thought that there would be no response to the listing and the flag building would be ended as quickly as it began. However, that was not the case. Within a week of listing my first flag, I received a response, worked with a guy on the details of the flag he wanted, and completed the first sale. I couldn’t believe that anyone would be interested in something I made. And now that the first sale was behind me, I knew I wanted to learn more to better the quality of each flag I made.

THE HOLIDAY BOOM

After that first sale, I started sharing with friends and family on Facebook what I had been doing for a couple of weeks. During the holiday season of 2020, my Facebook page and messenger app blew up with orders for flags and concealment cases that I was making. It was a joy getting to meet and make new friends through this time, and share my newfound hobby with old friends. Everyday during the holiday season was busy. Working shift work with my “real” job wouldn’t keep me from completing the projects that were in front of me. If I worked nights, I woke up early to get as much done before going in that evening. And if I was on days, I would get home and work as late as I could to get a much completed before bed. I even employed my son to help engrave stars and symbols on many of the flags because there just wasn’t enough time in the day to get it all done. However, with all this pressure of having to get the projects done before Christmas, I enjoyed every moment.

A BUSINESS IS BORN

After the holidays settled down at the end of December and doing extensive research into several machines that would help with the engraving part of the jobs, I decided to expand this little side hobby by purchasing my first CNC router. This Shapoko CNC machine expanded our options way beyond just engraving stars and symbols, it also enabled us to build customized signs, plaques, engraved stovetop cover and many other items made from wood. With this addition our business, Freedom Woodworks was born. Although the continuation of my “real” job would limit our business and time put into Freedom Woodworks, 2021 still reached far beyond what I could have imagined we would ever accomplish.

A SECOND MACHINE

With the unexpected success during the year and knowing that the holiday season was quickly approaching, we once again expanded the business by purchasing a high-powered laser. What the CNC couldn’t do in the area of fine detail, the laser stepped in and completed these tasks with ease. Knowing we had to quickly learn a new machine before the season was upon us, we ordered it at the end of October and prayed it would get here quickly. Once we received it, inspected it to make sure of no damages during shipping, and setting it up, we were off and running. Once again, our Facebook page and messages were loaded with people wanting the new items coming from Freedom Woodworks.

A NEW NAME

With the addition of the new machine came the ability to work with other materials like leather, acrylic, and other items made with wood. With our desire to continue in the growth of this business, and with our expansion into other materials, we started brainstorming of new names. What we wanted in the name was something more unique and different than any other name of a business out there. We wanted a distinct website and Facebook page, and our Freedom Woodworks was one of many on the web and social media. We also desired to have a name that wouldn’t link us to just woodworking but would expand the horizons of many designs using unlimited materials. In January of 2022, Rob5 Designs was born.

DREAMING BIG

It is our dream continue to make custom signs and more through this little “side hobby” that started from a purchased disappointment. For years to come, we look forward to the unexpected, the new friends, and the new places we get to see while on this journey. God only knows what these big dreams will turn into. So, we place all our trust in Him as we take new steps everyday on this crazy ride.
